Event wrap up!

Rock on!
Robin came out on top during our Rockband Tournament with nearly perfect scores on vocals! Robin and the next three finishers all went home with guitars for Xbox 360 or PS3! Emily also won the door prize of a gift certificate for pizza and a movie. Thanks to everyone who came out to play and a big thanks to The Video Game Store on Main St., Gamestop, and Januzzi's for donating prizes!

The third computer in the teen area is no longer just for searching the catalog. Now you can sign up to use the computer on the lower desk in the back of the department. A librarian will still need to log you in but this should shorten wait times for checking e-mail, writing papers, and catching up with your friends on MySpace. Collins, Yvonne and Rideout, Sandy. Girl v. Boy.

Sixteen-year-old Luisa Perez is not looking to win any awards for school spirit. In fact, she and her friends make it a point to avoid all activities considered "extra-curricular." So when her English teacher volunteers her to be an anonymous columnist for the school paper, Luisa's first impulse is to run. But, unlike her high-school dropout sister, Luisa does want to go to college--it may be her only ticket out of a life spent working at the cowboy-themed diner where she waitresses part time--and it would be nice to something on her applications.

Her first assignment is to cover her high school's latest fundraiser, which pits the girls against the boys. Painting and vampires

Hi everybody! I'm sure next week will be busyy as everyone gets ready for Thanksgiving so I just wanted to mention two programs coming up soon.

On Tuesday, we're going to be doing an art project where we paint the bookends in the library. Drop by and create your masterpiece and we'll use it to decorate (and well, to hold up books) in the YA department.

And then next Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, we'll also be planning a trip to see Twilight at the theater. Because this is an off-site event, you'll need to have a signed permission slip. Are you finished with the Twilight saga and looking for something to read next? The library has a couple new books that might be popular with Twilight fans.

Whitcomb, Laura. A Certain Slant of Light.
In sensuous prose, Helen, who has been dead for 130 years, describes what it's like to live as Light, clinging to a human host, then reentering an empty human body and becoming physically and emotionally attuned to the world. James, too, is Light, but he has taken over the body of Billy, who almost overdosed on drugs. Turkey, stuffing, and standardized tests. Yeah ... Unfortunately, it's the time of year to start thinking about what tests you'll need to take. The library has a new online resource to make preparing for the tests easier. And best of all, it's free. There are books available online through the site to help you study as well as practice tests. Check out the Testing and Education Reference Center.

Everyone knows that Melvil Dewey created the Dewey Decimal System. But did you know about his other idea that never quite caught on? Phonetic spelling. From Wikipedia:

In 1906, Dewey was one of the 30 founding members of the Simplified Spelling Board, founded by Andrew Carnegie to make English easier to learn and understand through changes in the orthography of the English language. His theories of spelling reform found some local success at Lake Placid: there is an "Adirondac Loj" in the area, and dinner menus of the club featured his spelling reform. A September 1927 menu is headed "Simpler spelin" and features dishes like Hadok, Poted beef with noodls, Parsli or Masht potato, Butr, Steamd rys, Letis, and Ys cream. It also advises guests that "All shud see the butiful after-glo on mountains to the east just befor sunset. Fyn vu from Golfhous porch."

Most of that didn't stick, although we do spell the word catalog the way we do (instead of the British catalogue) in part because of him.

Teen Open Mikes

On Tuesday, May 20th, we kicked off a New Season of Teen Open Mikes, which will run every third Tuesday of the month from 5-6:30 p.m. Favorite or original poems, songs, readings, jokes, magic tricks are all welcome. Following is an excerpt from Robin Davis' "Beyond the Shadow," a poem inspired by the works of Edgar Allen Poe:

Beyond the shadow of death and the grave
Awaits a person hoping for a save
Their life seems pointless and without a sense

Meet Barbara Weisberger

On February 5th from 4:00-5:30 p.m., the Osterhout Free Library is proud to present: Meet Barbara Weisberger, creator of the nationally known Pennsylvania Ballet in Philadelphia, and of the Carlisle Project, the pacesetting center for the development of choreographers and dancers. The scope of the discussion will be determined by the audience. The program was created for young people ages 11 and up, and two written questions for Ms. Weisberger will serve as a ticket for entry to the discussion. Thank you to all who participated and/or helped out with Open Mic! It went really well! We are planning to do open mic once a month so get ready for July! Announcements will be made through the blog and through our mailing list.
While I cannot disclose names (some participants were minors, obviously and I would need parental consent to post their names/performances) I encourage you to post your contributions so that others can see what open mic is all about! I can give you a brief rundown of the types of performances that took place:

We had a singer/songwriter/guitarist play her originals
a collection of poems from various participants
performing to a music CD
a cappella singing
softball songs; camp songs
and more...
I'll go ahead and post my own poem to get the creativity flowing on the blog; please feel free to post!

Recently recommended by the Osterhout Teen Book Club is Julie and the Wolves by Jean Craighead George. It is an interesting story of a thirteen year old Eskimo girl, lost in the Alaskan tundra during a turbulent change in the way of Eskimo life-style. Trying to escape a poorly arranged marriage, Julie/Miyax flees into the wild in hope of getting to San Francisco. Julie/Miyax seeks help from a wolf pack in order to survive thus, becoming a member of the pack in the process. Julie/Miyax is forced to accept the changing Eskimo life-style from the encroaching modern world.

We have the pleasure of introducing the newest member of the Youth Services Department team! Flat Isaac Osterhout is our international flat traveler. In February, Flat Isaac will depart for foreign lands to explore the exciting libraries and meet interesting people.

Teen Babysitting Course- A two part course will be offered on December 2nd & 9th at 9:00-12:30 p.m for ages 11-18th. Participants will be certified by the American Red Cross. The cost of the class is $40. Call 823-0156 EXT. 217 to register for this program.

The good people at the Barnes and Noble at 421 Arena Hub Plaza Wilkes-Barre will be holding book fair to benefit the Osterhout Free Library.

A percentage of net sales made during the week of September 24-30th will be donated to the library.

Welcome to Kindergarten!

Starting kindergarten this fall? Come to our Welcome to Kindergarten party! Children will hear stories about kindergarten and create a 'back to school' craft, while parents talk with Kindergarten teacher Sharon Hinchey. Mrs. Hinchey will talk about what to expect on that first day, and now to better prepare yourself and your child for a more pleasant school experience. There is no charge for this program but please make a reservation as space is limited.

The welcome party is on Monday, August 21, 2006 at 6:30-8:00 p.m. in the Youth Services Department at the Osterhout Free Library.

Kindergarten, Here I Come!

Leanne Grace, Director of the Rainbow Hill School and Liz Jordan, Director of the Wyoming Valley United Way's Success by 6 Initative will introduce parents to the parent activity guide developed by the Department of Education and the Department of Welfare. Each participant will recieve a copy of the guide that is filled with fun activities to give your child the foundation for positive and happy future school experiences. Children will be treated to a storytime session that will focus on early learning skills.

Join us Tuesday, August 29, 2006 at 10:30-11:30 a.m.

The Osterhout Free Library is pleased to announce a new opportunity for Child Care Providors for gain 2 hours of TQAS/PQAS credits at our newest early literacy training course. We will cover various storytelling techniques and how to apply for three key literacy levels. We will highlight new books and help in planning your curriculum.

Storytelling For Early Literacy takes place on Thursday, August 31, 2006 at 6:00-8:00 p.m.

Ever wonder what it takes to be a guide dog? Did you know that only special breeds of dogs can qualify as guide dogs? Did you know that you could take care of a puppy who will grow up to be a guide dog?

Come meet some guide dog puppies and their owners on Monday August 7, 2006 at 10-11:00 a.m. to find out more exciting information. Kaitlyn Makara and members of the Seeing Eye Puppy Raising Club will be here to talk about guide dogs and display their talents.
